Quotes from the readings
John Berger
"Any work of art 'quoted' by publicity serves two purposes. Art is a sign of affluence; it belongs to the good life; it is part of the furnishing which the world gives to the rich and the beautiful. But a work of art also suggests a cultural authority, a form of dignity, even of wisdom, which is superior to any vulgar material interest."
"Publicity is, in essence, nostalgic. It has to sell the past to the future. It cannot itself supply the standards of its own claims."
-
Nicholas Mirzoeff
"Today there are black presidents in both the United States and South Africa. Clearly, much has changed."
"Today the Berlin Wall has been almost entirely dismantled, its former course marked only by a line of cobblestones."
The Good Fight
The Good Fight |
For this week's selfie, I wanted to do something that is significant to my hometown of North Bergen, NJ, and the park I grew up in. With all the talk about maps this week and my inspiration from Jaune Quick-To-See-Smith, I also got inspiration from Cheryl Gross' exhibit "Boxing Babes & Cowgirls". I grew up spending a lot of time in James J. Braddock Park in North Bergen. Braddock was a famous Irish boxer from North Bergen. He was the heavyweight champion from 1935 to 1937, and the movie "Cinderella Man" is based on his own story. During the Great Depression, Braddock was an inspiration to all of his fellow North Bergen residents. I remember playing in the park all the time growing up, and I still like to visit and ride the swings occasionally. No shame in that, right? They were always my favorite. I also like walking around the park's lake, which has been the subject of many of my projects. I still enjoy passing by this statue and admiring it when I'm in the park. "Cinderella Man" is also a very good movie, and I highly recommend it.
