For this project, I chose to record myself making dinner for my family and my friend who came over iftar (breaking fast). The main theme of this video is community and care which is what I wanted to encapsulate for my performance piece. One thing that I stand by is caring for my loved ones and I like to show that in any way I can. My family isn’t really big on hanging out with eachother—let alone having dinner together—but during the month of Ramadan we always get together at the end of the day to break our fast. It’s one of the very few times I get to talk to all of them and have fun like we used to do and it’s nice having my friend around as well since she’s cool with my family as well.
I think it’s a beautiful thing to be part of a collective and somewhere you can drop the weight of everything and just be. I’m not that close with my family but for the month of Ramadan I like to cherish the moments we have together because it’s the only time where we remember to prioritize seeing eachother. I wanted to make something that was near and dear to me and one way I like to show my care for people is by cooking for them. One quote that inspired me to do this piece was by Shaun Leonardo that went, “artists need to take in, to process, to decipher, to separate from the noise and create things that are beautiful and impactful to the spirit.” I think in a society where you're constantly being told what to believe in and who to be, it's important to find a way back to yourself.
