For my performance piece I captured the motions of me drinking water and then the camera turning away from. It can be interpreted as a timelapse or simply a collage of images. I took these images at around 3AM, and at the time, I was just waking up from a nap. I was gonna do my skincare routine, but I decided to get this assignment out of the way
Khan Academy Performance Art An Introduction
"Many people associate performance art with highly publicized controversies over government funding of the arts, censorship, and standards of public decency. Indeed, at its worst, performance art can seem gratuitous, boring or just plain weird. But, at its best, it taps into our most basic shared instincts: our physical and psychological needs for food, shelter, sex, and human interaction; our individual fears and self-consciousness; our concerns about life, the future, and the world we live in."
- I like this quote, because I can relate to it. I used to this performance art was weird until I veered passed that, and realized it was an art form of expression.
"Whereas painting and sculpture relied on expressive form and content to convey meaning, performance art forced viewers to engage with a real person who could feel cold and hunger, fear and pain, excitement and embarrassment—just like them."
- You can definitely feel the life force in performance arts, and what these people are going through. It doesn't always have to be genius or comprehensive.
Berger, Ways of seeing Chp1
"The way we see things is affected by what we know or what we believe."
-This quote highlights the role of our knowledge and beliefs in shaping our perception of the world. It suggests that our understanding of an object or image is not objective but rather subjective, based on our own experience and knowledge.
"A woman must continually watch herself. She is almost continually accompanied by her own image of herself."
- This quote speaks to the pressure placed on women by society. Like they have to dress a certain way or be held I a certain standard. It goes to show that women are not only judged by other but also constantly do it to themselves.
Yoko Ono Influence
"Today, Yoko Ono continues to express her artistic practice strongly as ever. In 2011, the 78-year-old made history as the oldest artist to have a number-one dance hit with her single Move on Fast."
-It's inspiring to see that she doesn't stop in her old age. She also made a number 1 hit. That just goes to say that we can accomplish big things at any age.
'It would be fair to say that Lennon influenced Ono as much as Ono influenced Lennon, in some ways that improved and progressed both of their careers. "
- I thought it was pretty cool that she had some form of impact on the music of the Beatles.
Interview with Shaun Leonardo:
"I think the larger challenge surrounding not only the pandemic but also the converging crises of racial justice, reproductive rights, and everything else is the immediacy with which we are being called upon to act. This is infiltrated and influenced by social media and the sort of commotion and chaos of the news cycle: we feel compelled to act, act, act—to respond, respond, respond—and artists don’t operate best in that rhythm."
-It's important to find your own flow and stick with it, because they're too many external factors that can influence us before we even realize it.
'Artists need to take in, to process, to decipher, to separate from the noise and create things that are beautiful and impactful to the spirit. Artists have to offer a different type of slowness to work against the speed of today.'
-I think of Art as something spiritual that has been conducted by the mind. Your ability to connect and receive inspiration lay the foundation for some of the biggest artists today.
