Week 7

 Performance Piece

This week, I decided to make my piece about cleaning up and making my bed as it reflects the problem-solving around stress and mental health. My mom always told me that how your room is presented is how your mental health and stress reflect physically meaning that the more cluttered your room is, the more stressed you are. In the first photo, I try to show how the bed is consuming me, showing how the stress in my life overwhelming me and taking over me. In the next photo, I show how I finally decide to pay attention to myself and solve these problems in my life, representing the cleaning process of making the bed. In the last photo, I finally made my bed showing how relaxed I am to get rid of the stress and problems I was dealing with at the time and now I am able to relax and feel comfortable.

Khan Academy Performance Art

Shiraga Kazuo, Challenging Mud: I thought that the Challenging Mud Performance was very interesting not just because of how strange it can be to watch someone struggle and roll through the mud, but because of how it depicts something much deeper showing the defeat someone may feel. I think it is a great physical analogy and a great representation of the feeling of defeat and crawling your way out of problematic times.

Bill Viola, The Crossing: I think what made this performance interesting for me was the use of digital arts to create an illusion for everyone as it enhances the deeper meaning of the piece itself. I enjoyed the abruptness of the piece and how it begins quietly, nicely, and peacefully it is when the light rainfall begins, but I also like the change in dynamic and how the fire engulfs the man showing the two sides of the world, the zen, and evil.

Yoko Ono Influence

"
I think that this a very important quote to point out and to show people the purpose and meaning behind Ono's thought process and the purpose of making her art. I like how Ono shows how her art is more than just money and how her art is to benefit everyone to feel connected to something more than just the art piece.

"Interestingly enough, this artwork also displays her deep influence of Zen Buddhism, as Ono stated recently, when she was creating the controversial piece, she was originally thinking of Buddha and how he gave everything up."

I like the concept of the Cut Piece and how it shows the different perspectives of people's trust put to the test. I also do like the controversy the piece proposes and how Ono was willing to perform this piece, putting her body and life on the line in order to show the bigger picture and problem in the world.

Interview with Shaun Leonardo

"In each, Leonardo puts himself through physically exhausting processes, reflecting violence and hypermasculinity back to the audience."

I think that lots of people in the entertainment and sports industry look for these two principles, which is why people are so attracted to watching sports such as Football because of the aggression and violence it proposes. I like how Shaun Leonardo draws that type of attention to his performances to show people the deeper meaning of people's cravings for this type of violence and hypermasculinity.

"...he engages participants in movement workshops and nonverbal storytelling exercises as a way of understanding their own experiences."

I like how he isn't just a performer but a teacher in a sense too. I think it's cool how he shows people the art of performing and how to express a message without telling the audience the meaning and how to express emotion through action.
