Week Five

The first artwork I chose was “King Constance, 2022”, the mediums that were used was a mixed medium of assemblage and resin. When I first saw the piece I immediately saw the portrait of my family and me. I am the youngest out of 3, and I saw myself as the child in gold that is on the left side. Growing up I have been spoiled by my parents and grandma a lot, but I can't really say the same for my siblings. For the two people on the right, I see them as my older siblings. They had to grow up with “trial and error” parents meanwhile I had the “perfect” set. There was a lot of family trauma that I saw was put on my older siblings and the expressions on the faces in the portrait convey my sibling's emotions to our parents a lot. There are looks of sadness and numbness. I specifically see the one with the crown as my oldest sibling. They were brought into this world expecting unconditional love, but instead, they received unachievable expectations, they are supposed to be the golden child hence the crown. As for me, the child on the left my face is blurred, I’m too young to understand the environment that I am in. Behind the child on the left the walls are decorated and the surroundings look nice, but as the wall goes to the right, the wall becomes worn down, and the nice red wallpaper is no longer there. There are slight silhouettes in the background between the two children on the right. My interpretation of that would be the lasting effect of those who had done wrong in someone's life, even when they aren't physically there sometimes a person has enough power over you to still have an effect on how you live your daily life. The silhouettes aren't by the child to the right, because they still have the chance to live their life another way. I would say that this is a self portrait.

Another piece that I thoroughly enjoyed and had my attention in Danielle Scott’s exhibition was Queen of Angels, 2020. I really enjoyed the composition of the mixed mediums installed together to create a powerful and deep meaning. In this piece we see a woman walking confidently along the road made of newspaper titles that have positive messages and inspiration sayings with a huge halo around her head composed of sunflowers and a butterfly. We also see what appears to be her friends and relatives on her shirt showing us how she is doing all of this for her family and her friends, we also see the background is composed of blueprints showing a reference to reconstructing the future and making it a better place. The golden halo not only symbolizes being holy, but it also emits the positivity and happiness shown by the sunflowers and the thoughts of a free life represented by the butterfly. All of the elements within the piece shows how this woman is trying to reconstruct the future to have equal social treatment for everyone no matter what race they are. I like the overall message of reconstructing our personal lives and working to make our future how we want to see it.
