Week 2 Assignment (Allyson)

 John Berger Quotes

"By contrast, a women's presence expresses her own attitude to herself, and defines what can and cannot be done to her. Her presences is manifest in her gestures, voice, opinions, expressions, clothes, chosen surroundings, taste - indeed there is nothing she can do which does not contribute to her presence."

A woman is complex in many ways but her presence brings a certain essence into the room. When one looks at a women's presence you notice every detail about her from the walk she walks, the way she is clothed; a woman is such an intriguing force of nature.

"To be born a woman has been to be born, within an allotted and confined space, into the keeping of men. The social presence of women has developed as a result of their ingenuity in living under such tutelage within such a limited space."

When you become to categorize a woman you often hear how she is a mans keeper; however no one notices her attributes away from men, by combining women along with men it keeps the individual person a women is limited to be seen for herself.

Bell Hooks Quotes

"Patriarchy requires male dominance by any means necessary, hence it supports, promotes, and condones sexiest violence."

When many hear of sexist or domestic violence it is typically thought of a man harming a women. This seems into the term patriarchy that men are taught that they need to be tough and they cannot be pushed around or submissive to a woman; this is when a male beings to assert his dominance and potentially reacts with violence.

"Keeping male and females from telling the truth about what happens to them in families is one way patriarchal culture is maintained."

Dominance along with any form of violence or punishment can stem back to the way an individual was raised or what they have encountered in their childhood. A child that witnesses or hears about violence carries on in their older life believing that it is okay to continue those patterns.
