An Ode to the Kitchen Table Series

"Weems’s black-and-white photographs are like mirrors, each reflecting a collective experience: how selfhood shifts through passage of time; the sudden distance between people, both passable and impassable; the roles that women accumulate and oscillate between; how life emanates from the small space we occupy in the world."

Life is a series of interchangeable experiences and this quote definitely resonated with me. I appreciate how in her kitchen table series, she managed to get down every timespan of her life which goes to show that no matter how much you want it to, life's going to keep moving and things will continue to change.

"'Everyone can relate to this work,' Sann said. 'It’s not just Black women; it’s white women, Asian women. Men can see the women in their lives—memories from their childhood or scenes from their marriage or their family life. It’s so universal and yet representation like this is so rare.'"

As humans we all have our differences and this can either be a beautiful thing or an ugly thing-- it all depends on you. Representation is so very important for those who feel left out or don't have a say in the world. I think it's beautiful how Weem's work has the power to touch so many people, if not, anybody who looks at it.

"To photograph is to appropriate the thing photographed. It means putting oneself into a certain relation to the world that feels like knowledge -- and, therefore, like power."

As someone who has a deep love for photography, I think this quote greatly demonstrates how much love photographers have for their craft. There truly is a meaning behind every photograph and a photo can tell you more than any word can.

"Although there is a sense in which the camera does indeed capture reality, not just interpret it, photographs are as much an interpretation of the world as paintings and drawings are."

Paintings are inspired by reality and photos you see, I do believe there is a certain authenticity to photography because it truly is the only way to perfectly replicate reality.
